Jay Forrester is the Germeshausen Professor Emeritus of Management and Senior Lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Sloan School of Management. He began his career as an electrical engineer, working on large digital computers, and he is credited with inventing random-access magnetic-core memory (RAM). While Director of the MIT Digital Computer Laboratory (1946 to 1951) he was responsible for the design and development of one of the first high-speed computers. In 1956, Forrester started the System Dynamics Group at the Sloan School, establishing the field of system dynamics.
In addition to teaching, writing and speaking, Forrester is working on the National Model Project, a large computer model of the U. S. economy. He is also director of the System Dynamics in Education Project (SDEP), which is developing ways to use system dynamics and computer modeling as the foundation for a new type of K through 12 education.
Professor Forrester received a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Nebraska in 1939 and his S.M. in electrical engineering from MIT in 1945.
