Jeff Rayport's profile Jeffrey F. Rayport is founder and chairman of MarketspaceTM LLC, a content and consulting business that works with leading information industries companies to create sustainable competitive advantage in the networked economy. A unit of Monitor Group, the Cambridge-based strategic advisory services and merchant banking firm, MarketspaceTM operates three lines of business focused on strategic advisory, executive development, and software development services.

A faculty member at Harvard Business School for nearly a decade, Rayport focuses his research on new information technologies and their impacts on companies' service and marketing strategies, particularly in information-intensive industries. As a consultant, Rayport has worked with executives and corporations around the world, specializing in the development of breakthrough service strategies for network-based businesses, particularly in high-tech, media, entertainment, and data services. With co-author Bernard J. Jaworski, Rayport has published three leading MBA-level textbooks on strategy in the networked economy (e-Commerce, Cases in e-Commerce, and Introduction to e-Commerce) with McGraw-Hill/Irwin, and he has a forthcoming trade book on service strategies in the digital age from Harvard Business School Press.

At Harvard Business School, Rayport developed and taught the first e-commerce course in the United States. Established in 1994-95, his course, "Managing Marketspace Businesses," is a second-year MBA elective focused on technology-enabled service channels; the course has enrolled more than a thousand MBA students to date. In developing it, Rayport authored over a hundred HBS case studies. Business plans produced by students in the course resulted in dozens of high-tech start-ups, including Yahoo! Rayport's teaching at HBS also included "Service Management" and "First Year Marketing" in the School's MBA program, and "Achieving Breakthrough Service" and "Strategic Marketing Management" in the School's Executive Education programs. Prior to his leave from HBS, Rayport was voted Outstanding Professor in 1997, 1998, and 1999 by the Harvard Business School Students Association. Rayport continues to teach in the School's Executive Education offerings.

Rayport has appeared in a number of award-winning management videos, on-line training programs, and live teleseminars, including a nine-hour, three-part national telecast in 1997 with the Executive Education Network (EXEN) of Primedia. In 2001, he hosted a national prime-time weekly television show in Canada on digital business, "The Next Big Thing," on the cable-TV channel "Report on Business Television" (ROB-TV), owned and operated by Toronto's Globe and Mail.

Prior to joining the HBS faculty, Rayport was a reporter for Fortune, a telecommunications analyst for Nikko Securities (in Tokyo), and a principal of the Winthrop Group, a consulting firm specializing in the history of business and technology. His writing has appeared in a variety of publications, including The Boston Globe, CIO Magazine, Financial Times, Fast Company, Fortune, Harvard Business Review, Harvard Magazine, The Industry Standard, The Los Angeles Times, McKinsey Quarterly, and Strategy & Business, and he has appeared on numerous occasions as a business commentator on television and radio, including The Lehrer NewsHour on PBS, "Marketplace" and "The Connection" on National Public Radio, and on ABC News.

Rayport earned an A.B. from Harvard College, an M.Phil. in International Relations at the University of Cambridge (U.K.), an A.M. in the History of American Civilization at Harvard University, and a Ph.D. at Harvard in Business History. He serves as a director of several public and private companies, including Andrews McMeel Universal (parent of Universal Press Syndicate), CBS MarketWatch (MKTW), GSI Commerce (GSIC), International Data Group, and ValueClick (VCLK). He is also a trustee of several educational organizations, including the Hult International School of Business (an accredited MBA program designed for international mid-career students, based in Cambridge, MA), and From The Top, Inc. (the producer of "From The Top," a one-hour classical music radio program that features talented youth from across the United States, and is distributed on over 300 FM radio stations by Public Radio International).
