Michael Cohen's profile Michael Cohen is Professor of Public Policy and Political Science at the University of Michigan. He obtained his undergraduate training at Stanford and his Ph.D. (in 1972) at the University of California, Irvine.

His research centers on processes of learning and adaptation that go on within organizations as they adapt to their changing environments. He is a co-author of "Leadership and Ambiguity", a major study of the organizational problems facing American college and university presidents.

He has written numerous articles contributing to the theory of organizational decision making, many employing computer simulation. The best known of these is "A Garbage Can Model of Organizational Choice," coauthured with James March and Johann Olsen. He has been pursuing this theoretical work as an external faculty member of the Santa Fe Institute during 1995. .

In recent years his empirical research has focused increasingly on the organizational effects of information technology. He serves as director of the Ameritech Program on Information and Organization, an initiative designed to bring together the many disciplines of the University of Michigan that touch on the topic of "Information Technology and New Ways of Organizing." Participants in its lectures, conferences, and research projects come from University programs in Business, Economics, Engineering, Psychology, Sociology, Public Policy, and Medicine. He is a founding member of CREW, the Collaboratory for Research on Electronic Work, a multi-disciplinary team of University of Michigan Faculty who collaborate on studies in this area.
