subjects Adam Brandenburger writes about Competition, Economics
Adam Brandenburger's profile Adam Brandenburger is a professor at the Harvard Business School. He is the author of a number of Harvard's strategy cases and, with Barry Nalebuff, author of the book CO-OPETITION. His articles about game theory and business strategy have appeared in such publications as Harvard Business Review, Journal of Economics & Management Strategy, Econometrica, and Journal of Economic Theory. "The Right Game: Use Game Theory to Shape Strategy," which he wrote with Barry Nalebuff, was the lead article in the July-August 1995 issue of the Harvard Business Review. A pioneer in the application of the science of game theory to the art of management, Brandenburger has been interviewed by major publications around the world, including The Wall Street Journal and The Economist.

Brandenburger has brought his work to numerous business audiences, including groups at Fidelity Investments, IBM, McKinsey & Co., Merck & Co., and Xerox. "I find it fascinating," he says, "to go across the spectrum of theory and practice."

Born in London, England, Brandenburger was educated at Queens College, Cambridge University, where he began studying natural science-a mixture of mathematics, physics and chemistry. But he soon discovered that he was more interested in people, and liked mathematics, so he turned to economics. Upon graduation in the early 1980s, he says, "I was all set to go off to the city of London and make money, but my tutor tapped me on the shoulder and said, 'Ah, I think you should stay and do a one year Master's Program.' I realized I didn't have all the answers, so I stayed another year and did the Masters, and then realized I had even fewer answers, and stayed and started a Ph.D."

Receiving a Harkness Fellowship in 1983 to travel to the United States, Brandenburger studied one year at the economics department at Harvard and another year at Stanford Business School. "I'm very proud of the Harkness, " he says. "It was a big opportunity. Coming to the U.S. was very important, not just for my work but for me. I felt instantly at home." He was convinced that he wanted to live and work in the country. "I consider Americans greatly privileged. Here you have the freedom to be yourself, to design your life. You have a great deal of space."

After completing his dissertation on game theory and receiving his Ph.D. in economics from Cambridge in 1986, Brandenburger applied for a position at the Harvard Business School and began his teaching career as an assistant professor in 1987. Eight years later, he was a full professor. He has taught a variety of courses at Harvard, including " Managerial Economics " and " Competition and Strategy."

Teaching and writing take up a great deal of time. When asked about his hobbies, Brandenburger says, " Well, I run and try to lift weights-with moderate success-and I 'm trying to learn to cook, but mainly, I turn my work into play or my work isn't good. "

Adam Brandenburger lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with his wife, Barbara Rifkind. Adam met Barbara through his friend and co-author Barry Nalebuff. Barry, inventing an excuse to bring the two together, told Barbara she might have some professional interest in the book they were planning on writing and suggested they all meet for a drink. The next day Adam called Barbara to say, " I figured out there's something even more important in life than my book-It's you. Can we go out? " Barbara agreed and the two are now married.
