John Gardner's profile John Gardner was one of the country's most energetic and intelligent citizens. With distinction, he has served Presidents, advised government agencies, founded volunteer organizations, and served on boards and councils of corporations and nonprofit institutions. In 1964, Dr. Gardner was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civil honor in the United States.

Education:

AB, Stanford University; PhD in Psychology, University of California at Berkeley (1938).

Research:

The ingredients of community; urban problems from neighborhoods to metropolitan areas.

Professional Experience:

Executive Associate, Carnegie Corporation (1946–1954); President, Carnegie Corporation and Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (1955–1965); Consultant to government agencies, including AID, State Department, US Air Force, the White House, the US Delegation to the United Nations (1947–1965); Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare (1965–1968); Chairman, National Urban Coalition (1968–1970); Founding Chairman of Common Cause (1970–1977); Cofounder of Independent Sector (1980); Chairman of the National Civic League (1994–1996).

Publications:

Excellence (1961, 1984), Self-Renewal (1964, 1981), No Easy Victories (1968), The Recovery of Confidence (1970), In Common Cause (1972), On Leadership (1990), editor of John F. Kennedy's To Turn the Tide.
