subjects Nicholas G. Carr writes about Information Systems
Nicholas G. Carr's profile Independent business writer whose work centers on business strategy and information technology, was named one of the "ten people to watch in 2004" by American Airlines' American Way magazine. His book Does IT Matter? Information Technology and the Corrosion of Competitive Advantage, published in spring 2004 by the Harvard Business School Press, argues that IT's strategic value has diminished steadily as its presence and power have grown. Carr's ideas have sparked a widespread debate on the role and value of information technology in business and have been featured in articles in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Financial Times, The Economist, Newsweek, BusinessWeek, USA Today, Fortune, Forbes, CIO, Technology Review, Computerworld, and Information Week, among many other publications.

Carr has written more than a dozen articles and interviews for the Harvard Business Review, including "IT Doesn't Matter," "Hypermediation: Commerce as Clickstream," "Being Virtual: Character in the New Economy," and the popular case study "Bob's Meltdown." He has also written for the MIT Sloan Management Review, Financial Times, Wired, Boston Globe, and Business 2.0 and wrote the monthly "Decoding Business" column for the Industry Standard for more than a year. He edited and wrote the introduction for The Digital Enterprise and contributed to World View and Organizing Business Knowledge.

Between October 1997 and May 2003, Carr held top editorial positions at the Harvard Business Review, including executive editor and, for most of 2002, acting editor. Articles he edited won McKinsey Awards as the best articles published in HBR in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002.

Carr has been a speaker at many business forums, including the Harvard Internet & Society Conference, Comdex, the Harvard Business School Strategy and the Business Environment Conference, the IBM/Forbes Executive Forum, the Wharton Technology Conference, the Government CIO Summit, the SG Cowen Technology Conference, and the Eastern Academy of Management Annual Meeting. He has also appeared as a business commentator on CNN, CNBC, Tech TV, and New England Cable News. Before joining HBR, he was a principal at Mercer Management Consulting. He holds a B.A. from Dartmouth College and an M.A. from Harvard University.

Carr consults and provides editorial services to a select group of clients.
