Alvin Toffler's ideas changed the change-makers. Read by presidents and prime ministers, and published in the multi-millions all over the globe, his books, co-written with his spouse, Heidi Toffler, have crossed over into global popular culture as well.
Published in over 30 languages, the Tofflers' global best-sellers have inspired songs by world famous rock stars, put new words into the dictionary, and made the Tofflers into global personalities, even better known abroad than they already are in the US.
The Toffler books include classics like Future Shock, Powershift, and most recently Creating a New Civilization. In China, their book, The Third Wave, became the "Bible" of the young people who marched for democracy in Tienanmen Square.
These books forecast the explosive rise of the computer as far back as the early 1960s. Alvin Toffler wrote and lectured about PCs, electronic "agents," virtual reality, and today's electronic networks decades before there was a Silicon Valley. When the forerunner of the Internet had only 700 people on it, the Tofflers were on it and telling the world about it! They described the VCR years before it even had a name. They forecast the coming of cable TV when most experts and consultants believed that "advertisers would never back cable." They long cautioned about the dangers of large-scale downsizing and dislocation, and they forecast the crack-up of the Soviet Union more than ten years before it occurred.
The global impact of Alvin Toffler comes not simply from spotting such changes, but from setting them into a coherent framework, providing viewers and listeners alike a powerful tool for thinking about the future.
Alvin Toffler holds many honorary doctorates and other awards. He has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is the world's most reputable and influential futurist. The name Toffler is synonymous with the future. |
