Out of the Crisis

Brief description of Out of the Crisis

"Long-term commitment to new learning and new philosophy is required of any management that seeks transformation. The timid and the fainthearted, and the people that expect quick results, are doomed to disappointment."

According to W. Edwards Deming, American companies require nothing less than a transformation of management style and of governmental relations with industry. In Out of the Crisis, originally published in 1986, Deming offers a theory of management based on his famous 14 Points for Management. Management's failure to plan for the future, he claims, brings about loss of market, which brings about loss of jobs. Management must be judged not only by the quarterly dividend, but by innovative plans to stay in business, protect investment, ensure future dividends, and provide more jobs through improved product and service. In simple, direct language, he explains the principles of management transformation and how to apply them.

Comments by amazon customers about Out of the Crisis

Good, but dry
The concepts discussed in the book are interesting, but his way of discussing them is not very organized, and the book is a tough read. It's worth the time if you are interested in quality improvement in some sort of production line.

Deming Applied to America's Medical Care Crisis
I read this book in 1986 just after I became the Vice President of Medical Affairs at Employers Health Insurance Company in Green Bay Wisconsin. I am using it as a reference for the book I am now writing, "The Third Way". This book was part of the Quality Improvement education and training for the executives and managers of the company. Quality Improvement was part of the corporate culture of EHIC and this book was the Bible. Deming's teachings were being applied to the business operations at the insurance company. Reading his philosophy from the standpoint of a physician recently transitioning from medical practice to administration was like emerging from the darkness into the light. Although application of the principals in this book and Deming's philosophy to our medical care delivery system would not provide a complete solution to the crisis it is absolutely a major foundation block for structuring reform. I recommend anyone interested in understanding the American Health Care Crisis and with an interest in understanding solutions that will and will not work read this book.

Most Important Reading
This book is one of the most important books of the 21 Century. The problems and solutions it describes are more relevant today than back in the eighties when it was written. As a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt, I witness and work to correct the management systems that lack faith in the belief of their workforce. Alex Fedotowsky Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt

book review
First time buying books online. The book was in great shape. Thank you

Timeless Wisdom
This is a classic, and an important work in quality control/6 Sigma. The material is getting somewhat dated as far as examples, but the princples are timeless, and as valid today as they were 25 years ago when the book was first written. Deming's no nonsense approach is both easy to read and easy to understand. Strongly recommend for any manager - particulraly one where there is a Six Sigma environment.
