Comments by amazon customers about Networlding: Building Relationships and Opportunities for Success (Jossey Bass Business and Management Series)

My go-to resource for networking
Whether you are intimidated by the thought of networking or you consider yourself to be a master connector, there is much to be learned from this book. All too often, peoples' approaches to networking have been transactional, self-serving, and well, unproductive especially in the long-term. Melissa Giovagnoli and Jocelyn Carter-Miller have provided a solid framework and authentic approach to building relationships- one that's based on a person's most important values. The Networlding approach is founded on the idea that if you initially focus your efforts first on creating a primary circle of connections who share similar values and offer different types of support, then you are able to build a more fulfilling network- one that consists of mutually beneficial relationships leading to opportunities for co-creation and collaboration. This book easily guides you through that process and gives you chances to put the teachings into practice. I have personally adopted many of the principles from this book and incorporated them into my networking approach (for example: making connections for your primary circle). As a result I have developed and maintained relationships that have helped me to achieve my goals, advance my career, and realize rewards. And the best part- This book has helped me to understand how I can contribute to the success of others by having a "pay it forward" attitude. This book is practical, well-written, and the key to my success as a networked professional.

A new decade . . . still relevant (and needed)!
We have access to more and more contacts than ever before. My LinkedIn profile says I have 5.8 million contacts through 3rd degree connections. That's more than half the population of my home state, Ohio. But how many of your contacts are true connections? Connections are those people with whom you share similar values; people you collaborate with to create mutually beneficial opportunities, whether personal or professional; people who believe that anything is possible. That's Networlding. This book was written 10 years ago, but the content is still very relevant (and needed!) if we are to create business and personal opportunities that make a difference. And it's especially true and we move more and more into social media and virtual spaces for connecting. This book provides a great framework, concrete steps, and resources for anyone who wants to consciously create better relationships and results. I'll share with you 3 takeaways I valued from this book: 1. The Networlding assessment asks about 20 questions that allow you to know your place on the Networlding continuum, from novice to Networlding expert. Although I've grown my networking skills, the assessment pointed out some areas to work on that are covered in the book's content. 2. The value of creating a primary circle. I never created a primary circle until reading the book. I'm realizing the value of having 5-10 close, trusted connections with whom I consciously create opportunities. This smaller world creates more rewarding and long-term benefits. I've learned to become more discerning about where I spend my time - and the people I spend it with. 3. Continuous evaluation. Step 7 in the Networlding process is about recreating our Networld - and being conscious of what our networks are yielding. I'm one who likes to explore many opportunities, and because of Networlding I'm becoming better at determining which relationships and opportunities are worth pursuing, and moving on from those that aren't. I have better focus, better relationships, and better results!

A rewarding approach to relationships
The authors have penned an approach to networking that is both systematic and powerful. Built on a base of shared values, Networlding is an exceptional guide for getting the most out of relationships. For everyone looking to succeed by doing good, this is a must read.

It's not what you know...
Networlding is an entertaining read and a great place to start in thinking about building your network. If you want more than a list of 10,000 Twitter followers talking about what they had for breakfast, it's going to take some work in finding the right ones, establishing your common interests and building trust. Melissa and Jocelyn have done a nice job of making this into a structured plan while keeping it fun.

A Must Read
The logical manner in which the information is presented has provided me with a far more comprehansive understanding of not only what I can expect for others but how I can help others, especially reciprocating contacts. The methodiology utilized in newworlding surpasses any other forms of networking I have used in the past. If your career is a relationship based career, then learning to use the various steps on a daily basis will make any professional all the more successful and profitable.
