Good to Great and the Social Sectors: A Monograph to Accompany Good to Great

Brief description of Good to Great and the Social Sectors: A Monograph to Accompany Good to Great

Jim Collins Answers the Social Sector with a Monograph to Accompany Good to Great. 30-50% of those who bought Good to Great work in the Social Sector.

  • This monograph is a response to questions raised by readers in the social sector. It is not a new book.
  • Jim Collins wants to avoid any confusion about the monograph being a book by limiting its distribution to online retailers.
  • Based on interviews and workshops with over 100 social sector leaders.
  • The difference between successful organizations is not between the business and the social sector, the difference is between good organizations and great ones.

Comments by amazon customers about Good to Great and the Social Sectors: A Monograph to Accompany Good to Great

Effective concept reorientation
Collin's effectively reorients his "Good to Great" discussion to the social/non-profit sector with two primary key differentiators, the mandated use of defused power/authority by the leader and a redefinition of resources to a "resource engine" comprised of time, money and brand.

Good to Great Monograph
nice addtion to the Good to Great Book for government and social segments of the economy. Help to focus on what your focus should be in defining what you can be best at, what you have passion for, and how to define meaningful metrics for your big harry goals.

not very specific or missing details: do not buy this book
I has been working for the public sector for over 15 years. Those times were a part of my long journey to search for the right realistic answers to fill the gaps between increasing demands from people and the services delivered. I has been very tired of bureacracy inside, lack of passion for those so-called experienced, and strong private interests, let alone the unpredictable political influences. This book does not help much for my long quests.

A Good Translation of the Non-Profit Leader's Needs
I am simply a volunteer in the non-profit sector, so that might have affected my perception of this supplement to Jim Collins' outstanding book but it seemed a bit short of the incredible insight of his book. Maybe I just expected a whole lot more or maybe it needed a bit more collaboration (with those in non-profits) or the kind of research that went into Good to Great or Built to Last. I would say this book will confirm what experienced social sector leaders already know and act as a good discussion guide for leaders in the social sector to use when bringing Good to Great to their teams.

Great addition to the book
I work in church ministry and found the original Good to Great to be an amazing book. However, it definitely felt like there were parts of the book that either didn't apply to my setting, or needed to be changed. This very short addition is perfect. It really compliments the book well and is exactly what I felt was missing for those working in the social sector. Good stuff.
