One of the best management books I've ever read Reviewed by William E. Cooper for Reader Views (8/06)
As a retired Chief of Police it was my responsibility to set the mission, vision, and strategy for the organization, as well as ensure it achieved the goals and objectives we set. Such goals are accomplished by and through the organization's employees. Getting and keeping them is absolutely essential to success. I currently teach graduate school courses in Leadership, Organizational Development, and High Performance Organizations, where one of my main points of emphasis is the organization's people. I've read hundreds of books, conducted considerable research on the subject, and wrote my own book, Leading Beyond Tradition. Of all the research and reading I've ever done I have never found a book as well focused and spot-on as Mr. Blakesley's. This is, without question, one of the best management books I've ever read.
Mr. Blakesley has clearly taken considerable time and effort to craft a clear, concise, and specific road map to employee selection and retention. He makes a sound case for current and future status on the subject, and gives his readers excellent and fact based methodologies for success. He brings a model for defining the job itself, the ideal candidate characteristics for the job, the selection process, and a performance management system. He brings a wealth of personal experience and anecdotes that clearly illustrate his points.
